Rabies Immunization Charges

Human rabies immune globulin (HRIG) and rabies vaccine are not inexpensive. They are special, uncommon medical interventions that are highly effective for life-critical animal exposure events that are uncommon. So, it would be expected that biomedical products that will never be used by a high-volume market would be pricey.

However, fortunately, the majority of the cost will usually be covered by insurers once medical necessity is established by us. Of course, your final out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan’s deductible, co-pay, and other specific charge amounts for which you are responsible. Our physician answering your after-hours call cannot deal with any of this. During routine office hours our billing staff will provide accurate numbers on the actual cost to you. There will be no “surprise billing”.

Importantly, some insurers do not reimburse rabies vaccine and HRIG at amounts that cover its cost. We obviously cannot pay for your care. In that case, if our physician is in your plan’s provider network, his expert services and visits with you will be applied to your insurance. But, HRIG and vaccine will be available here through International Medicine Center, which is not a member of any medical insurance network. At this time, this is true for Medicare, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and Cigna. So, under these plans, your insurance will cover physician consultation and visits (co-pays due from you at the time of the appointment) and you will be provided documentation to help you forward the HRIG and vaccine charges you had paid for possible reimbursement by your insurer. To be clear, with these insurers and any others who do not sufficiently reimburse reasonable charges for HRIG and rabies vaccine, you will need to pre-pay, out-of-pocket, for HRIG and vaccine to be dispensed. This is unfortunate, but the situation created by medical insurance payors.
